"Why The Body Wonderful? How could it feel like that to me?"
All too often we feel far from wonderful; all we feel is pain, stiffness, fatigue, out of shape, lacking in co-ordination, or even a sense of 'not being all here'. Far from 'wonderful', it seems to be more about 'My body wont...', 'I'm getting old...', 'I used to be able to'..., 'I wish I could...', 'I would if...' And the concerns about being unable to work or live life to the full can be scary. Yet.....
We've been subtly led to believe that the body is a disaster, a failure of design that we have to force to 'behave' through exercises, or fill full of drugs, in order for us to live in it. But it's really not so. Our bodies know how to be, how to work, how to move freely, and can be assisted to function without pain. The truth has been masked; the body is actually remarkable, extraordinary, incredible, and certainly wonder-full.
'Really?' I hear you say. 'Why is it so 'wonderful' then?' Well, to start with, even when we do feel compromised in some way, our bodies are still carrying on the most staggering amount of things to keep us alive. Each second there are approximately 400 trillion chemical reactions going on in you to give you life. Your breath carries on regardless of what you are doing. You don't have to remember to beat your own heart. And if you knew how many muscles are assisting you to just read this page, and how your body knows exactly how to maintain its springy and vibrant structure, you would be blown away!
It doesn't often feel wonderful though, does it? And what happens in life? Each time we have a problem - a pain, or stiffness - we understandably go off in search of an answer, and all we usually get is, “You have x”, or “Oh, its y - get used to it". Labels, and that’s that. Or is it? Perhaps we need to ask something like this, “So? What's in a name?", "Can I un-do what happened?", "Ok, but what now?" Even if we do ask, we are often given exercises to do, pills to take, or 'helping equipment' in the form of braces, collars, or sticks. Maybe even surgery. Even though these can be very helpful short-term it seems we still find ourselves speaking our limitations wherever we go: those, “I can’t”, or "I have to save my back" or "I can't stand for long" statements.
“Be careful what you say to yourself because you are listening.” Yes, you are! And we tend to believe what we hear ourselves say. (And thinking is just 'internal voicing'; we hear that too.)
Would you like to enjoy being in your body, rather than disliking, fearing, or fighting it? To feel how your body can be after a 'system restore' to your 'blue-print' of ease at birth? No matter how you arrived, you still had more energy, vitality, and confidence back then, but it isn't just getting older that might have wearied you (you might still be in your teens), it's that no one ever let you know some very simple facts about how your 'earth suit' body works best in your everyday life. No one gave you a good map of where it bends and where it doesn't, or what happens if everything inside it lives with not enough room to function well. You may have had lots of advice as to what you 'should' do, but you didn't find out how, or if, this was right for you. You may have had lots of judgment heaped on you about how you look, or how you are, but this doesn't help at all. You won't find judgment in my teaching, but you'll discover things which really do help you feel soft but strong, light but grounded, calm but energised, open yet confident, flexible yet safe, and also fully yourself.

It matters not what shape you are, how fit you are, how old you are, or how many things seem to be wrong; the work I offer can begin to release the things that prevent you from feeling at ease. This work is far more about letting things go, subtracting things, peeling things away, and re-membering what is underneath. So, what are these ‘things’ that need to go? They are the ways in which we decided, albeit sub-consciously and in differing ways, to respond to our lives. The ways you decided ‘This how I am'. Things that go on repeating over and over in us, all in the name of the labels we have been given, labels we have agreed to: "I'll never be able to..." "I'm no good at...." "But I've got...." Working together we can find your way to un-decide. You can begin to have new experiences in lessons taken with me - experiences of free movement, light poise, flexibility, and presence - and you can start to live a life of "I can…", "I am able to…", "I used to have pain, but it's better now..."
I have seen over and over that when we understand how we work, and experience our body as, not a great mistake, but the wonderful creation it is, everything changes. When we look at the miraculous things it does for us and sense its innate willingness, we can befriend it again, listen to it, allow it to work, to trust it, feel gratitude towards it. And we can begin to use it fully and happily through our open response to life, and not through all the old shoulds and oughts, can’ts and mustn’ts.
